Advanced Technology and the Paper Industry

Paper is something that some of us use or see almost every day. We can see papers posted on walls, we use tissue paper for wiping dirt off, we use paper for writing letters or essays, we read newspapers, magazines, and books, and many others. It is true that the print and paper industry was on its peak for the past years. However, in our changing world, new inventions have been made which somewhat affected the print and paper industry. Technology emerged and some print materials are now replaced with online materials.

Exhibition at Tissue World Miami

Come March 21-23, 2018, there will be a tissue industry paper expo and conference in Miami, USA, where over 200 exhibiting companies and 2500 visitors are expected to attend. This Tissue World Miami paper trade show is expected to attract numerous industry experts, and if you are concerned about the future of the industry you should attend.

Next, experts still believe that digitalization has benefits in paper and packaging. Ilkka LeppävuoriWill Poindexter and Oliver Straehle will tell us about it.

Unfolding the Benefits of Digital in Paper and Packaging

There’s no question that the rise of digital technology poses threats to the paper and packaging industries. Demand for paper has fallen as business and transactions move online, particularly in more developed markets where Bain estimates that consumption may decline by 3% to 5% per year. Contracts, invoices and everyday communication flow without paper, and consumers are switching from print magazines and newspapers to online and mobile versions.

There is, however, another side of the digital story in paper and packaging, one that creates opportunities for cost savings and product innovations with new revenue streams. As in other industries, leading paper and packaging companies are showing how to harness this new potential to gain competitive advantage, particularly in three areas (see Figure 1): Read more here.

People may say that because of technology, the print and paper industry is already at risk. However, it still provides us with benefits and advantages in different ways. Now, let us read an article by Ian Melin-Jones. He will tell us how four technologies poised to disrupt the specialty paper market.

Four Technologies Poised To Disrupt The Specialty Paper Market

In its latest research Smithers Pira has identified four novel technologies that are set to increase capacity and enable new product opportunities for manufacturers of specialty papers across the next five years.

The new Smithers Pira market report – The Future of Speciality Papers to 2022 – provides a comprehensive overview of this important sector of the paper industry. It incorporates both higher volume applications, like flexible packaging and label stocks, and more niche segments like electrical insulation, filtration, and security papers.

Smithers Pira analyses the different fortunes to chart how global consumption of speciality papers in 2017 has reached 24.16 million tonnes. Steady growth will continue through the end of the decade at 2.2% per year to push this figure to 26.98 million tonnes in 2022. Read more here.

So they developed a unique kind of paper which actually could be stretched.  Another is foam forming which is a papermaking process that can produce nonwoven-type materials on paper machines with excellent formation uniformity, bulk and porosity. Great! Anyways, these are all analyzed by experts and every detail is examined.

On another note, Bloomberg will now tell us about a Silicon Valley startup called Ripcord which could do many things.

Disrupting the Paper Cut Industry

A Silicon Valley startup called Ripcord has unveiled a machine that takes stacks of paper, pulls out the staples, rapidly scans the paper and send the scans to the cloud. That seemingly inane task is done at breakneck speed. Watch what happens when Bloomberg Technology reporter Ian King tries to do the same thing. (video by Matt Gottschalk, Camen Hodges) (Source: Bloomberg) Read more here.

Wow! So this is another advanced invention that could help people and make work easier. Just imagine spending hours removing staples from papers and individually scanning them. It would take you a whole lot of time before you could actually finish just a few of it. Luckily, Ripcord has this machine that dos all of it for you.  It just proves that advanced technology is not endangering paper industry. It is just giving them help and also giving the people assistance.
